Three Ypsilanti residents gather blankets, canned goods for needy

Superior Township Treasurer Brenda McKinney, Sidetrack owner Linda French and Superior Township resident Samantha Towler are teaming up for the fifth straight year to help keep the area’s underprivileged warm and fed this holiday season.
The trio is once again soliciting blanket and canned goods for the “Blanket Express” drive, which last year collected over 500 blankets for the needy.
“Residents in the township really like doing this,” McKinney said. “They actually call me and e-mail to remind me not to forget to get going on it. There is a need for it in our community.”
Towler started the program five years ago and French and McKinney have since signed up to help lead.
McKinney says the program grows every holiday season, and last year was extra special because one resident donated 29 handmade shawls, which were then dropped off at the Bortz Health Care Center and Nursing Home on Michigan Avenue.
“That was a really nice experience because we were really able to give a lot of patients new and nice blankets,” McKinney said.
Much of the food is donated to the Food Gatherers, and the blankets are provided to several area churches.
The deadline for donations is December 11, though McKinney said blankets or food donated past the date will still be put to good use.
At 11a.m. on Dec. 12, residents are invited to join the group in distributing the donations, which will be done on a Christmas float with Santa and Mrs. Claus and their helpers.
“Throw everything in a pick up truck and drop it off? Noooo – we get out the Santa suits gloves, hats and costumes for the helpers and have a good time with it,” McKinney said.
Residents can drop off new blankets at the Superior Township hall on Prospect Road or at Sidetrack Bar and Grill in Ypsilanti, but McKinney said that she prefers donations go to the Township hall.
“Linda and I have a little competition going for bragging rights, so everyone should drop off donations at the hall,” she said jokingly.
