It’s an overused word these days according to Dwayne Taylor, 32, but he says “change” is exactly what Washtenaw County needs in the Sheriff’s office.

Taylor, an Ypsilanti resident, is running on the Republican ticket for County Sheriff. While sitting in a booth at the Big Sky Diner in Ypsilanti Township, he said he knows he does not have as much experience as his opponent Democrat Jerry Clayton. But Taylor said Clayton brings too much baggage with him.

“I think there has been a big deal made about my lack of experience but I think that is a bonus,” Taylor said. “If (the community) wants someone who is going to serve a special interest…I think Clayton will do that.”

Taylor says he has lived in Michigan all his life. He grew up in the area and attended Ann Arbor’s Huron High School. After a 5-year stint as a reserve police officer for the Decatur Police Department and two years as an auxiliary police officer with the Inkster Police Department, Taylor now works in private for Great Lakes Protection.

“To me the Sheriff has a duty to all of the city’s in the county whether they have a police department or not,” Taylor said. “Living out here as long as I have, I’ve seen so many things that have been neglected."

Taylor said the neglect comes from a lack of diligence in budgetary and social matters in the County. He said he would like to see more cooperation in the police department as well as more discipline. He also said he wanted to see a Sheriff that would get out and walk and be a part of the community.

“I would definitely look at policies and procedures to see what could be changed,” he said.

As far as funding Taylor made mention of voluntary pay cuts and the possibility of outsourcing training.
