Area amateur filmmakers invited to compete

Lovers of Ypsilanti rejoice—now you can express your feelings for your favorite city, encourage people to move here, and maybe make a little extra money.
The ‘I Love Ypsi’ video contest, hosted by Concentrate Media, emYOU! The Magazine and the Ypsilanti Citizen, challenges amateur filmmakers to produce videos explaining why they love Ypsilanti. First prize is $150, with the second place receiving $100 and third awarded $50.
The video contest is part of a larger movement to get people to come to the city.
Tim Adkins, of emYOU!, said he hopes the videos will showcase why Ypsilanti and the people that live in the city are great.
“We really want to encourage people to move into the area,” Adkins said.
Teresa Gillotti, community and economic development educator for Ypsilanti, said she is excited to see what people come up with.
“People have really strong feelings about Ypsilanti,” Gillotti said. “Sometimes Ypsi gets a bad rap, but this lets people tell their tale.”
She added that there are three possible categories for videos to be placed into. The first category, ‘Love at First Sight,’ is for the people that have loved Ypsilanti the first time they laid eyes on it.
The second category, ‘Opposites Attract,’ is for those who never expected to like Ypsilanti, but have gradually come around.
The third category, ‘Love to Hate You: Hate to Love You,’ is all about Ypsilanti’s challenges, but also its potential.
The contest runs until Oct. 19 and online voting for the videos is scheduled to begin the following day and end on Oct. 27. The winner will be announced Oct. 28 and the video will be shown at emyouthemagazine.com, concentratemedia.com and at YpsiCiti.com.
The videos will be hosted online at YouTube. To enter the contest, go to the Web site and click “Video Response.” From there you can upload your own ‘I Love Ypsi’ video.
Gillotti noted that by putting up all the video submissions, she hoped it would generate good buzz about the city.
“I think the idea is that if you start Googling Ypsi, you’ll see some nice things pop up,” she said.
In addition to the video contest, Ypsilanti is hosting an open house event, scheduled for Oct. 31, to be held at SPARK East, located at 215 W. Michigan Ave.
People are invited to drop by and see some of the houses listed on the market in the city. Representatives from Ypsilanti public schools, the police department, and from assorted neighborhood organizations will be on hand to answer questions.
