Lieutenants Annas, Walker to interview with city manager

By Dan DuChene
Dec. 10, 2009    ·    10:28 a.m.

The next chief of the Ypsilanti Police Department will likely be one of two YPD lieutenants.

City Manager Ed Koryzno, charged with hiring the new chief, announced the list of six candidates for the position had been narrowed to two after interviews were held Dec. 4.

The two YPD lieutenants now being considered for the position are Craig Annas and Amy Walker. The four who did not make it to a second interview were from Detroit, Port Huron, Westland and Flat Rock.

Koryzno, who is charged by the charter to hire the chief of police and will conduct the upcoming interviews, said he hopes to make a final decision within a week.

The first round of interviews was conducted by two interviewing committees. The six candidates interviewed with a police advisory committee and a citizen advisory committee.

“The Police Chief is the face of the Police Department to the community and the consensus of both committees was that the two internal candidates distinguished themselves as having the potential to be that person,” Koyzno said in today’s announcement.

The position became vacant after Matthew Harshberger, who left his position as YPD chief in May to take a similar position in Pittsfield Township.
