After leaving his mother in a house fire, a 43-year-old Ypsilanti Township man was shot and killed during a confrontation with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 12:10 a.m. Sunday, a witness reported a home on the 1200 block of Pageant in Ypsilanti Towship was on fire and that one male suspect was seen leaving the premises with a gun. The caller also stated that they believed that the suspect's mother was still in the home.
Responding Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office Deputies encountered an individual at the intersection of Wendell and Redleaf fitting the description of the suspect leaving the house fire. The interaction resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The suspect was transported to St. Joes Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. No officers were injured.
At the scene of the house fire on Pageant, a 66-year old female Ypsilanti Township resident, was found deceased. Foul play is suspected in the woman's death. The Michigan State Fire Marshall is investigating the house fire, while the Michigan State Police is investigating the woman's death and the officer-involved shooting incident.
