The Ypsilanti Downtown Development Authority’s Design Committee looked at nine bids from four sign contractors for the signal tower at the corner of Cross and River streets in Depot Town at its Monday meeting.
A motion from DDA member Sandee French to accept a design from Huron Signs was seconded by Scotty James, DDA board member and design committee vice-chair. The motion passed unanimously.
There will be further discussion about the materials used for the sign when the full DDA board meets Dec. 17. There will also be a vote on which suggested sign the DDA will use.
Progress was also made on the Cross Street Streetscape project at Monday’s meeting. Board member Linda French suggested there should be more public input on the East Cross side of the Michigan Department of Transportation project. The deadline for receiving comments from the public is today. They will be put together and reviewed by the committee and a decision will be made.
When the city and MDOT decide the course of action on the streetscape project, they will again open up the discussion to the public. The timeline for the project requires all local matching funds to be signed off on in June.
The DDA could be asked to provide a traffic study. Board members said a traffic study would benefit the streetscape project and help give some directive for the future the train stop in Depot Town - expected to be up and running by Oct. 2010.
Finally, the design committee discussed the holiday lights. The committee reported tree lighting in Depot Town is mostly done and the lighting for downtown is going up this afternoon.
The bid that was accepted for the lights in downtown included a deadline for completing hanging of the lights. The Design Committee discussed the possibility of not paying the contractor if the lights are not completed on time.
