Police suspect playground fire arson in weekend summary

Armed robbery arrest
Two Ypsilanti residents, including one minor, were arrested after allegedly robbing an Ypsilanti Township business at gunpoint Sunday.

According to a report from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred as five employees of the business were entering the story to open for the day, when they were allegedly greeted by the armed suspects and secured in the back of the store.

While the employees were in the back, the two suspects allegedly took money and fled the area. However, a witness was able to gather vehicle information.

Police said deputies located the vehicle near Huron Creek Apartments.

“Deputies gave chase on foot to the 16-year-old suspects as he fled the vehicle,” the report said. “He was arrested and transported to Washtenaw County Juvenile Detention Center.”

The 23-year-old suspect was arrested and transported to the Washtenaw County Jail.

Both suspects will be arraigned tomorrow. No injuries were reported.

Armed robbery arrest
Eastern Michigan University police officers arrested wanted in connection with an attempted armed robbery that occurred Saturday in Ypsilanti Township.

Police said the incident occurred at the 2400 block of Washtenaw Avenue at 4:20 a.m., when the two suspects and the two victims were ordering take-out food.

While ordering the food, the two suspects made comments about the victim's glasses and then left the restaurant to wait for the victims to exit the building.

“While the victims were walking to their vehicle they were approached by both suspects, armed inside a vehicle attempting to get their glasses,” a report from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office said. “The victims fled back into the restaurant for safety.”

Later, EMU police conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle and arrested the 18-year-old Inkster resident and 19-year-old Detroit resident.

Both were transported to the Washtenaw County Jail, where they will be arraigned later today.

Arson
Authorities discovered a fire that caused $50,000 in damage to playground equipment in Ypsilanti Township was started intentionally.

According to a release by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, the fire occurred 3 p.m. Sunday on Andrea Street near Heather Ridge. The playground equipment was on fire when authorities arrived on the scene.

The release said the investigation is on-going, but suspects are unknown at this time.

Burglary
Gold jewelry was reported stolen from an Ypsilanti Township home Sunday.

Deputies responded to the 6100 block of Aspen Way at 4 a.m., where no signs of forced entry were discovered.

Suspects are unknown at this time.

Burglary
A radio amplifier, century safe and miscellaneous jewelry were reported stolen from a Superior Township home Sunday.

Deputies responded to 1500 block of Harvest Lane at 10:20, where it was discovered entry had been gained by kicking in the back door during the past two weeks.

Police said the investigation is on-going.

Burglary arrest
A 27-year-old Ferndale resident was arrested after invading a home in Ypsilanti Township, police said.

Deputies responded to the 2900 block of Washtenaw Avenue at 8 p.m. where it was discovered the suspect kicked in the door of the residence after a verbal altercation with the homeowner.

The suspect was transported to the Washtenaw County Jail and a report will be forwarded to the prosecutor.
