Police report suspects stole thousands in merchandise

Two Ypsilanti teenagers were arrested by Ypsilanti police Sunday, after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a downtown business.
According to a report released by the Ypsilanti Police Department this morning, officers from the Michigan State Police, Eastern Michigan University Police and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office responded to help arrest the suspects, who had fled from Puffer Reds with shoes and clothing after triggering the store’s alarm system.
The report said three officers were on foot patrol in the area, when they heard the alarm sound from the closed clothing store at 9:30 p.m.
“The suspects ran on foot and tried to hide in a wooded area near the Huron River,” the report said. “A perimeter was established quickly.”
A search dog from the MSP was used, and one suspect was found near the river shortly. Police then spent 90 minutes trying to locate the second suspect, who had attempted to flee the search dog by swimming downstream in the river.
The second suspect was eventually found in a wooded area, shivering from the cold water. Police said he was treated for potential hypothermia and a sprained leg.
The suspects are 16 and 17 years old, according to the release.
