The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has identified the vehicle suspected in Saturday's hit-and-run in Ypsilanti Township that left an 11-year-old pedestrian hospitalized.
Derrick Jackson, director of community engagement for the WCSO, said the headlight cover found at the scene was used to identify the vehicle as a red or burgundy 1994 to 2001 Chevy Lumina.
He said the vehicle should have damage to its front passenger side, as opposed to the driver side as previously reported by police.
The victim, an Ypsilanti Township resident is still listed in critical condition after the crash. Jackson said he has suffered “pretty significant head trauma,” with swelling of the brain.
He said doctors removed the victim from life support Monday and he spoke a few words today for the first time since accident Saturday.
“He's progressing slowly,” Jackson said.
First reported Monday, the incident occurred Prospect Road, between Holmes and Clark roads, where the victim was struck by the vehicle, which was headed north on Prospect, after he left the Circle K party store on Clark Road on foot with two other teenagers at 11:20 p.m.
“The suspect vehicle continued north on Prospect Road, fleeing the crash scene,” the release said. “The road conditions were wet and it was raining when this occurred.”
Jackson said the headlight cover was inspected for patterns and matched to the make and model through conferring information with manufacturers.
Anyone with information about the crash or the suspect vehicle is asked to call Detective Robert Losey, at 734-973-4791, or the WCSO confidential tip line, at 734-973-7711.
