Great pitching carried the Sliders to sweep the Traverse City Beach Bums over the weekend.
Sliders pitching only allowed four earned runs in the three game series. The Sliders needed every bit of the pitching, winning the first two games by one run 1-0 and 3-2.
The Slider’s offense came alive in the third game leading to a 7-3 win.
Mike Penn stifled the Beach Bum bats. After a leadoff triple in the first inning which made the score 1-1, Penn didn’t allow another hit until the seventh inning. Allowing his teammates to score seven runs and build a comfortable lead.
Sacrifice flies in the third inning by Roberto Mena and Robbie Knapp put the Sliders up 3-1, followed by a Ben Barrone RBI single in the fourth.
Barrone added another run with a solo home run in his next at bat. In the seventh the sliders scored two more runs on a Beach Bum error, making it 7-1.
Penn (4-4) pitched eight strong innings, giving up 3 runs and striking out seven. Earl Oakes pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game.
James Albury and Jeff Fischer recorded wins in the first two games of the series for the Sliders.
The Sliders begin a six game home stand starting 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
