The Midwest Sliders won in dramatic fashion Tuesday, beating the West Division leading River City Rascals 4-3.
Bryan Bonner hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Clay McCord.
Roberto Mena and Gilberto Zayas gave the Sliders the lead in the fourth inning. Mena doubled to left center and with two outs. Zayas brought him in with a double down the right field line.
The Rascals (27-15) answered right away scoring three unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning. Andy Reilly reached on an error by Zayas and advanced to second on a balk by Sliders starter Kyle Kearcher. Chad Maddox was then hit by a pitch and JoJo Batten cleared the bases with a single and a fielding error by Zack Pace. Chris Colten made it a two run lead with a RBI single to center.
The first two Sliders batters in the sixth inning would reach base and score to tie the game. Bryan Bonner singled, followed by Zack Pace getting hit by a pitch attempting to sacrifice bunt. Jimmy Baker would score Bonner with a single to right and Sam DeLuca scored Pace with a two out single to center.
The Sliders (19-22) would win with the first three batters reaching base in the ninth inning against Rascal reliver Tony Marsala (0-2). Pinch-hitting, McCord hit a leadoff double to right center followed by Robbie Knapp’s bunt single. With the Rascals infield drawn in, Bonner hit a line drive to right scoring McCord easily.
The Sliders started Kearcher, who receive a no-decision despite throwing six innings and giving up no earned runs. P.J. Zocchi (2-1) would get the win, pitching three innings of scoreless relief.
Jake Laber pitched eight strong innings for the Rascals. Laber gave up one run on five hits while striking out ten Sliders.
The second game of the series will be today at 7:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium. James Albury will take the mound for the Sliders. Albury (5-1), along with teammates Jimmy Baker and Roberto Mena have been named to the 2009 Frontier League East Division All-Star Team.
