A 6-1 lead heading into the eighth inning wasn’t enough Thursday night as the Midwest Sliders fell to the Traverse City Beach Bums 7-6.
The Sliders (33-34) scored four runs in the fifth inning, to take the 6-1 lead. Zack Pace and Roberto Mena scored on Robbie Knapp’s single and Joash Brodin followed with a triple scoring Knapp and himself after an error.
Midwest starter Mike Penn only allowed one unearned run in the first seven nnings before loading the bases with no outs in the eighth. Reliever Earl Oakes came in trying to pitch out of the jam.
The Beach Bums’ (31-38) next two batters would strikeout; however Andrew Franco delivered a grand slam to right making it a 6-5 ballgame.
Arshwin Asjes would suffer his first loss of the year. Asjes (1-1) gave up a single, walk, and then a double steal put both runners in scoring position. An intentional walk loaded the bases trying to induce a double play. Andrew Franco had other ideas, Franco ripped a line drive down the left field line scoring two runs and giving the Bums a 7-6 lead.
After a 5-1 home stand, the Sliders travel to Avon, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie Crushers in a four-game series.
The Crushers are in second place in the Eastern Division, five and a half games ahead of the third place Sliders. Midwest will return home Tuesday with a three-game series against Evansville.
