The Midwest Sliders won against the Traverse City Beach Bums, 7-2, in an eight-inning exhibition game tonight at the Beach Bums’ Wuerfel Park.
The Sliders scored seven runs off 10 hits with no errors. Traverse City scored two runs off four hits with one error. The two teams play again in an exhibition double-header tomorrow in Traverse City.
Jerry Garland, a representative for the team, said the star hitter of the game was New Jersey-native Mikel De la Rosa. Garland said De La Rosa managed two hits in two at-bats with 2 RBIs. Chelsea resident Jimmy Baker had two hits in four at-bats and two RBIs.
James Albury, an Australia native, was the games starting pitcher. The winning pitcher was Michael O’Leary.
The Sliders’ season opener is scheduled for May 20 in Kentucky, against the Florence Freedom. The team kicks off its home opener May 29 in Oestrike Stadium against the Windy City Thunder Bolts.
“There’s a lot of interest,” Garland said when asked about local ticket sales. He said the team expects 800-1000 people in attendance at most games, but with most tickets being “walk-up sales.”
Tickets are prices at $8, with $1 discounts for seniors 55 years old or older, Children younger than 13 and EMU students with student identification. He said there are still discounts available for season tickets and package deals.
