Despite a solid pitching performance from Kyle Kearcher (1-1), the Slider’s came up just short against the Rockford RiverHawks Wednesday night, losing 4-3.

Kearcher went seven 2-3 innings, striking out four, and giving up four runs on eight hits. RiverHawk pitcher Kyle Wright (1-1) outdueled his counterpart, going 8 innings allowing two earned runs on nine hits.

The RiverHawks had a 3-0 lead after Jason James hit a leadoff solo home run to right field in the fourth inning. After a one out base hit Kearcher settled in, ending the inning with a line out double play. He retired 9 consecutive RiverHawks, including striking out the side in the fifth inning.

The Sliders were quick to answer in the bottom half of the fourth. Jimmy Baker leadoff with a single to left and with Sam DeLuca walked with one out. After a fielder’s choice by Ralph Rosas advanced both runners, Roberto Mena hit a two out double pulling the sliders within one.

Both teams tacked on runs in the eighth to keep it a one run game late. The Slider’s couldn’t crack RiverHawks closer John Muller (S,3) who came in and pitched a perfect ninth, including a strike out to end the game.

The series finale is tonight 7:05 at Oestrike Stadium.
