The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti reached the .500 mark Wednesday night, beating the Traverse City Beach Bums 12-7.
Relief pitching from John Haldis and Eric Gilliland held the Beach Bum bats in check and Joash Brodin lead the way offensively with four hits.
Beach Bum Starter David Dinelli would only last 1/3 of an inning.
The Sliders (33-33) took a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning with two walks and three straight singles from the top of the order. Zack Pace and Roberto Mena scored in Robbie Knapp’s two-run single. Clay McCord and Knapp would both score on bases loaded walks, followed by Brodin scoring on Jonnie Knoble’s sacrifice fly.
Bryan Bonner made it a 7-0 game with a two-run single to right.
The Beach Bums (30-38) would make a game of it in the third and fourth innings. Scoring five runs to cut the deficit to two.
Andrew Franco scored on Mike Epping’s single. John Alonso brought two more in with a double to left later in the third.
Mike Victor’s two-run shot in the fourth made it a 7-5 game, with the Beach Bums still threatening. Haldis came on for starter Kyle Wink and induced an inning-ending double play.
In the seventh inning, the Sliders added five more runs. Knoble knocked in two with a triple to right.
Haldis pitched three 2-3 of middle relief and picked up his second win of the season. Gilliland earned his first save, going three innings and striking out four.
Midwest will look to sweep Traverse City and the six game homestand 7:05 p.m. tonight at Oestrike Stadium.
