Series tie breaker set for this afternoon

By Josh Curmi
Jun. 23, 2009    ·    1:11 p.m.

The Midwest Sliders (12-17) broke out the bats and ended a four-game losing streak beating the Washington Wild Things (11-18) 9-1 Monday.

The game was tied at one going into the sixth inning, when the Sliders broke out with four runs on five hits to take a 5-1 lead.

Sliders Manager Eric Coleman was pleased with the offensive output. “It was a good team win,” he said. I hope we got our bats going, and didn’t use up all of our hits tonight.”

Roberto Mena and Jimmy Baker leadoff the inning with singles, Mena scored on fielder’s choice by Gilberto Zayas. Robbie Knapp would hit Baker in with a single to center field. Knapp went 4-5 on the day with two RBI’s. The Sliders would score two more runs with two outs. Bryan Bonner doubled in Knapp and would later score on a single by Stephen Flora.

Adding runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth, the Sliders took a commanding 9-1 lead. That allowed their bullpen to attack Wild Thing hitters, and take advantage of great starting pitching.

Sliders pitcher James Albury recorded his third win of the season on a strong performance. Albury went six innings allowing one run and striking out six. Middle relievers Nate Kafka and Chris Nyman pitched one inning each, until Earl Oakes came in and stuck out the side in the ninth.

With the win tonight, the Sliders evened the three game series at one game apiece. The series finale will be tomorrow at 12:05 p.m.
