The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti baseball team is hosting a kickoff “meet and greet” event for the 2009 season.
The event, being held April 8 from 5 p.m. to 7.p.m. at Frenchie’s Restaurant in Depot Town, is free of charge.
Rob Hilliard, Team President said the organization is excited for the event, as the team’s first game at Eastern Michigan University’s Oestrike Stadium is scheduled for May 11.
“We are looking forward to the first formal opportunity for our Coaching Staff, players and front office to meet the Ypsilanti Area,” he said.
Fans will be able to talk baseball, meet players, and receive autographs. Also, the team’s Executive Vice President of Business Development, Tim Birtsas, will be signing autographs. Birtsas is a Michigan State University alum and former first overall draft pick of the New York Yankees. He won the 1990 World Series with the Cincinnati Reds, as part of the infamous “Nasty Boys” bullpen.
“Tim loves talking baseball and meeting people,” Hilliard said.
Not only will this season be on the agenda, but the team’s long-term plans for baseball in the Ypsilanti area.
“We want to move forward on the here and now, but also the future of baseball in this community,” Hilliard said. “We have architects working on drawings on what a field in Ypsilanti may look like.”
In addition, Hilliard will be available to answer questions concerning season tickets, group pricing, sponsorship opportunities and becoming a host family for the 2009 season.
The Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti will be playing all of their 2009 home games at Eastern Michigan University’s Oestrike Stadium.
The Sliders are part of the Frontier League, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball.
The first home date is a spring training game against the Lake Erie Crushers. Half of all proceeds from this game will be donated to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washtenaw County.
The official home opener is May 29, against the two-time defending Frontier League champion Windy City Thunderbolts.
