Fourth win in a row for Ypsi baseball

Despite only three 2-3 innings from starter Jeff Fischer and seven total walks, the Midwest Sliders beat the Traverse City Beach Bums 2-1 Tuesday.

Dan Horvath got the Sliders out of a jam in the third inning. Horvath took over for Fischer who walked the bases loaded, came in a produced a big strikeout to end the inning. Horvath pitched three 1-3 innings of relief only allowing one hit.

The Sliders (32-33) would take the lead in the bottom half of that inning. Zack Pace walked and would get to third on Roberto Mena’s single to right. Jimmy Baker brought Pace in with a fielder’s choice to make it a 1-0 game.

Mike Epping tied the game for the Beach Bums (30-37) after scoring on Andrew Barbaro’s RBI single in the eighth inning. Epping reached on a bunt single and advanced to third after attempting to steal second and the throw went into center field.

Pace once again ignited the Slider offense in the bottom half of the eighth. Leading off with a single to right and scoring on a clutch two-out hit from Joash Brodin.

Jimmy Baker also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out by left fielder Sean Hoorelbeke at the plate. Baker collided violently with catcher Robby Alcombrack who held on to the ball despite remaining on the ground for several minutes.

Alcombrack was helped off the field and left the game in an ambulance.

Earl Oakes pitched the seventh and eighth innings, giving up one unearned run. Oakes (2-1) received the win striking out three Beach Bums.

Arshwin Asjes pitched the ninth inning for the Sliders. Asjes recorded his tenth save of the season ending the game with a strikeout with the tying run on second base.

The middle game of the series is today at 7:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
