The Midwest Sliders beat the Florence Freedom 4-2 Wednesday in the season opener on the road in Kentucky.
Starting pitcher P.J. Zocchi (1-0) kept the Freedom bats silent through the first four innings only allowing one hit.
The Sliders took the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a leadoff triple by Dom Lombardi who went 3-4 and had two RBI’s on the night. Jimmy Baker brought him in with one of his two doubles on the night. Baker went 2-4 with one RBI.
Extending their lead in the top of the sixth, Lombardi hit a two run double with two outs, making it 3-0 Sliders.
Florence battled back in the bottom of the sixth with two runs after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Billy Mottram hit his first home run of the year, followed by a single by Jay Johnson, and a RBI triple from Tim Grogan. J.J Pannell relieved starting pitcher Zocchi for the Sliders and recorded the final out of the inning.
The Sliders bullpen was fantastic holding onto the 1 run lead over the final 3 1-3 innings. J.J. Pannell, Arshwin Asjes, Earl Oakes (S,1), gave up just one hit over in their relief effort.
In the top of the ninth, the Sliders tacked on an insurance run when Baker scored after an error by Florence shortstop Dan Williams on Ben Barrones ground ball.
The Sliders play in Florence again tonight at 7:05 p.m. The team's home opener at Oestrike Stadium will be May 29.
