Located on different the south and north sides of the city, Ypsilanti and Lincoln aren’t separated by much; the same could be said for on the football field.
The Ypsilanti Phoenix scored the only touchdown to win 6-2 beating the Lincoln Railsplitters Friday night.
Inclement weather was a factor in both teams game plan and caused a low scoring affair.
With 13 seconds in the first quarter Ypsilanti got on the board. Quarterback Terrance Moore found fellow senior Josh Whitfield in the corner of the endzone on fourth and goal from the six.
Field position was a key all night, which caused Ypsilanti’s head coach Jason Malloy to make a tough decision. Pinned back inside their own five yard line on fourth down, Malloy decided to take a safety on purpose, rather than give Lincoln good field position.
Lincoln, down 6-2 with 7:33 left in the first half, couldn’t take advantage. The Railsplitters would have to punt after not being able to pick up a first down.
The second half was much like the first, played in the middle of the field with neither team generating any offense.
Lincoln had a last chance to win the ballgame, needing to go 76 yards in just under two minutes with no timeouts. Senior quarterback Andrew Dillon connected with sophomore Kendall Thompson for 26 yards into Phoenix territory. However faced with a fourth and 12, Dillons pass fell short with just 44 seconds left.
Ypsilanti took over and was able to run out the clock.
Malloy earning his first career win as a head coach along with his team’s first of the season was proud of his team and the effort they gave.
“We fought and gave the effort,” Malloy said. “It was the battle of I-94, we played tough for 48 minutes.”
Malloy also knew what this means for him and his team, in just his second game since taking over the program.
“This means we are doing things the right way,” he said. These kids deserved a win.”
Despite the tough loss, Lincolns head coach Chris Westfall knows his team fought through tough conditions all night.
“It was frustrating,” Westfall said. “One of the most frustrating nights I have ever been a part of, it meant a lot to me to see how we fought and played hard. They played their tail off.”
Ypsilanti earning their first win of the season improves to 1-6 and travels to Saline and Lincoln who fell to 2-5 will host Ann Arbor Huron next week.
With this being the first “Interstate Clash” the Superintendents of each school wanted to make the game interesting. With Ypsilanti winning, Lincoln’s Superintendent Lynn Cleary will wear a Ypsilanti Football jersey to the next board meeting.
