The Ypsilanti Township Fire Department put out two brush fires Monday night near the north-east corner of Whittaker and Textile roads.
Firefighters Ron Eddington and Keith Harr responded to a call from a passing motorist sometime after 8:30 p.m. and extinguished the two fires near a Washtenaw County Drain Commission reservoir.
Estimating the two fires spread to a combined quarter-acre in size, the firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within minutes using a water pump backpack and a shovel.
After extinguishing the flames, Eddington and Harr said it was unlikely the fires were started from natural reasons and guessed someone my have started the fires from an improperly discarded cigarette.
