Update: 8:56 a.m.
Gmail was out of service for "a number of" consumer and business accounts worldwide this morning.
The problem occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. according to a brief status update on Gmail help. However, the problem was resolved at approximately 8:30 this morning.
"The problem is now resolved and users have had access restored," the update says.
The last issue with Gmail was in August 2008 when the contacts system was preventing Gmail from loading properly. No update has been given as to why this morning's problem occurred.
Thousands of people from around the world including Austria, Malta and Germany reported the problem on the social networking site Twitter.
"I appreciate gmail going down this morning," one user wrote. "It shut my blackberry up for awhile..."
