Nolan Shaffer pitched eight innings of scoreless baseball Thursday night in his Slider debut as they beat the Kalamazoo Kings 2-0.
Shaffer had just been signed by the Sliders after leaving the Florence Freedom.
Though the Sliders only managed five hits, they scored two runs which proved enough, thanks to great pitching.
Shaffer (1-0) gave up only three hits in his eight innings. The second inning was the King’s only threat. A single and two walks loaded the bases. Shaffer pitched out of the jam and was on cruise control from there.
The Sliders (26-27) took a 1-0 lead when Jonnie Knoble scored on Clay McCord’s sacrifice fly.
In the eighth, Robbie Knapp tacked on an insurance run for the sliders singling in Bryan Bonner.
The Kings (34-21) couldn’t hit Arswin Asjes either, who pitched the ninth inning for his seventh save of the season.
Robert Bernard suffered a tough loss for the Kings. Bernard (4-2) pitched eight plus innings and gave up two runs.
The series continues tomorrow against Kalamazoo at Oestrike Stadium 7:05 p.m.
